Hear an inspiring keynote speaker about the power of perseverance and select two breakout sessions from a dynamic and diverse lineup of topics and presenters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hosted by Federation\u2019s Commission for Jewish Education (CJE), the Anita & Robert \u1dbb”\u02e1 Naftaly Day of Awareness is designed for anyone touched by disabilities and those interested in enhancing safe, supportive and inclusive environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

A long-time supporter and member of our community, Bob was a current member of the Jewish Federation Board of Directors and over the years has served on numerous committees that have been vital to guiding our organization and all of Jewish Palm Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

As many could attest, he was most dedicated about supporting his wife, Anita, and her passion for special needs education in the Jewish community. In their honor, Day of Awareness was renamed in 2022 and is a tremendous legacy, providing support and resources to those with special needs and their family as well as educators and community advocates.<\/span><\/p>\n

FEATURED KEYNOTE: Haley Moss<\/span>
\nAssembly Required: From Nonspeaking to Attorney and Beyond<\/span><\/h3>\n

Autism does not come with an instruction manual, but there are tools to build an amazing life. During this inspiring keynote, we will hear from Haley Moss, a nonspeaking child, diagnosed with autism at age of three who is now an extremely talented author, artist, attorney and advocate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Explore Haley\u2019s journey to find her voice and her \u201cvillage.\u201d We look to a future filled with hope, inspiration, and excitement for neurodiverse individuals. Haley will explore neurodiversity, acceptance as well as her unique perspective on how society views autism and related disabilities. Empowering Digital Independence: Safeguarding Neurodivergent Adults in the Online World<\/span>
\nSpeaker: Sara Bookspan, MS, BCBA, IBA<\/span><\/p>\n

Explore practical strategies to help neurodivergent adults navigate the online world with confidence and safety. This session will cover key topics such as recognizing online scams, managing social media interactions, and maintaining privacy and security. This talk is designed for families and caregivers looking to support digital independence while ensuring a safe, positive online experience. Bookspan is the founder of Behavior Shapes, helping to educate and empower parents through joyful and creatively inspired strategies.<\/p>\n

Using Effective Communication to Foster Parent and Educator Relationships<\/span>
\nSpeakers: Dr. Kim Berryhill, SEDNET and Lissette Martinez, Florida Diagnostic Learning and Resource Center<\/span><\/p>\n

During this session, you will learn how to enhance effective partnerships between home and school settings. This includes navigating organizational structure, using effective communication skills, and promoting advocacy skills for children and adults while maintaining cultural sensitivity.

Co-presenter Dr. Kim Berryhill, EdD PsyS NCSP, brings with her an impressive more than 25-year career in education as an exceptional student education teacher, school psychologist and now SEDNET Project Manager. In this current role, she works with Palm Beach County Schools to create and facilitate a network of key stakeholders committed to providing a quality system of care for students with or at risk of emotional and\/or behavioral challenges.<\/p>\n

She is joined by Lissette Martinez-Morales, M.Ed, who has more than 35 years working in education and recalls always feeling drawn to the unique needs of students while teaching. She currently supports the Palm Beach County Schools\u2019 Exceptional Student Education (ESE) department through FDLRS as a parent and family services specialist. She is passionate about teaching parents and families how to advocate for their children with educational needs while collaborating with school administration.

First Responders and Families<\/span>
\nSpeaker: The Hedelund Family, Autism Society of Florida<\/span><\/p>\n

Join this dynamic session to learn about the valuable relationship between first responders and people living with unique abilities. This session is led by the Hedelund family, including 17-year-old Dalton and his brother Martin, both who were diagnosed with autism at age two-and-a-half are now thriving, straight-A high school students.

They will be joined by their father, Captain Martin Hedelund Sr., who spent more than 36 years in law enforcement before recently retiring as Executive Captain\/Assistant Chief of Police in Pompano Beach, and their mother, Margi. Martin and Margi founded the nonprofit, Responding 2 Autism and are both first responder trainers for Autism Society of Florida.

Overwhelmed to Empowered: Riding the Waves of Parenthood<\/span>
\nSpeaker: Marisa Hughes, LCSW<\/span><\/p>\n

A powerful opportunity for parents to learn mindset shifts and evidence-based tools for emotion regulation and practical coping skills to support themselves and their children.

Hughes is a licensed therapist and parent-coach passionate about paving the way for intergenerational healing, and helping empower parents to do the inner work for themselves and their kids. A mom of two with a neurodivergent family, Marisa brings personal and professional insight to her work.

The Hidden Barriers Facing People with Disabilities<\/span>
\nSpeaker: Aaron Kaufman, Jewish Federations of North America<\/span><\/p>\n

The world is a lot more accessible today than in the past, yet harmful misconceptions and stigma surrounding people with disabilities inhabit their ability to be full members of society. Learn about how far we have come and what more we can do.
\n

<\/i> about the speaker<\/a><\/div>
Since 2016, Kaufman has served as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill focusing on disability advocacy and enhancing Federation\u2019s focus on inclusivity. He brings with him with a robust background in disability inclusion. His leadership experience started while at University of Maryland and then to ARC Maryland more recently. There, he lobbied the state legislature on policy facing those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Having cerebral palsy, he now brings with him a unique personal and professional perspective to JFNA\u2019s growing efforts.

Building Empathy and Eliminating Stigma<\/span>
\nSpeakers: Katherine Murphy, NAMI Palm Beach County and Patrick Heidmann, Disability Rights Florida<\/span><\/p>\n

An interactive session on the intersection of mental health conditions and other disabilities, this workshop will explore the connotations of mental health symptoms, and how mental health is treated differently from other family issues. This session dives into empathy and self-care strategies.
\n

<\/i> about the speaker<\/a><\/div>
Murphy is the CEO of NAMI Palm Beach County, having previously served as director of programs since 2016. She serves in various leadership roles with NAMI Florida and Florida Mental Health Advocacy Coalition to ensure the voices of family members and peers are represented in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n

A behavioral advocate for more than 20 years and a father of an adult child diagnosed with a mental health disorder, Heidemann made a career change a decade ago to behavioral health. He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in behavioral health at USF, Tampa and currently works for Disability Rights Florida (DRF) where he continues to identify system reforms for behavioral health and disability systems.<\/p>\n

Thriving in Your Community: Safety, Awareness and Opportunities for Adults with Disabilities<\/span>
\nSpeaker: Emily Schmitz, ARC Broward<\/span><\/p>\n

The desire to have a sense of belonging and the opportunity to experience, learn, work, and enjoy life is universal. This session will explore how adults with disabilities can confidently and safely navigate and engage within their communities, while offering caregivers practical tips and tools to promote and support their loved ones\u2019 independence.

Schmitz has worked in the field of mental health and intellectual disabilities for more than 20 years, with 18 of them being at Arc Broward in Sunrise, Florida. She believes in the importance of family and caregiver support as people with disabilities develop skills and confidence in their ability to make choices, build relationships, and seek out opportunities within their communities.

Wandering: Informed Ways to Keep Loved One\u2019s Safe with Autism<\/span>
\nSpeaker: Katie Wentley, Autism Society of America<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of wandering, did you know that drowning accounts for 91 percent of deaths in autistic individuals ages three to fourteen? Water safety skills and preventative strategies play an integral role in increasing safety for those with autism. This session will provide strategies to identify the potential precursors to wandering, how to safeguard homes, and help develop a safety plan.

Wentley, a Water and Wandering Program Manager at the Autism Society of America, is passionate about the safety of the autism community using a multitiered approach with a focus on preventative strategies. Katie has spent her career teaching, working with, and learning from the Autism community in the classroom, the pool, the kitchen, and the gym. Most recently, with the Autism Society of America, Katie developed Safety on the Spectrum: Accessible Aquatics\u2122 to address critical issues of preventable water-related deaths in the Autism community.
