JCRC ASSEMBLY RESPONDS TO EVENTS IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Published January 13, 2021
The violence of the past week in our nation’s capital and our seat of democracy, as well as the hatred, racism and antisemitism that accompanied them, have been shocking and difficult to absorb.
As we reflect on the divisions and challenges that face our nation, we must look to our core Jewish values to guide us. The values of tzedek (justice), tikkun olam (repair the world) and chesed (kindness) have rarely been more critical. At times like these, we recognize that for all of the progress toward realizing these ideals over millennia, there is much more we can do to strengthen society, improve human lives and create a strong and secure Jewish future.
We, the undersigned members of the Assembly of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Palm Beaches, reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the following principles:
• | We believe in the importance of civil discourse and action, which are far more powerful than violent behavior and hateful rhetoric. |
• | We believe in standing up to hatred in all forms. An attack on any faith, race, background or perspective is an affront to all of us. |
• | We believe that it is our role as a Jewish community to work together toward efforts that reflect common values. |
• | We believe in a welcoming community for all those who share these guiding principles. |
We seek to offer our community opportunities to demonstrate compassion, generosity and a dedication to making a positive difference. Only together can we care for those who need our help, celebrate our traditions, overcome challenges and make the world a better place.
Thank you to every member of our community who joins us in upholding these sacred duties.
Signed,
